The short answer: doodling probably sustains attention during dull, low-demand tasks, a tedious phone call being the canonical case, and probably does nothing, and may actively interfere, when you are trying to absorb something demanding. The famous "doodling boosts memory 29%" figure rests on a single small study of one narrow task, and it circulates everywhere with the conditions that produced it quietly amputated.
The Study Everyone Cites
In 2009, Jackie Andrade at the University of Plymouth ran the experiment that started all of this. Forty participants listened to a deliberately monotonous mock telephone message and monitored it for the names of people coming to a party. Half were assigned to a doodling condition. A surprise recall test followed.
The doodling group monitored more accurately and recalled 29% more information.
A real result, and a genuinely interesting one. Two details vanish in almost every retelling.
They weren't doodling freely. Participants shaded printed shapes on a response sheet and were told explicitly not to worry about speed or neatness. That is a rhythmic, undemanding motor task, nearer to fidgeting than to drawing. Nobody was inventing a picture.
It was forty people on one task. A small sample, a specific variety of tedious listening, and a gender split of 35 women to 5 men. Not a criticism of the study, which was candid about its scope. A caution about how far the finding travels.
The Proposed Mechanism
Andrade's explanation is more interesting than "drawing makes you smarter."
When a task is boring but demands attention, the mind wanders. Daydreaming is cognitively expensive: it draws on the very resources the task requires, and it is difficult to catch yourself doing. A small, undemanding secondary activity may occupy just enough capacity to crowd out the daydreaming without competing with the primary task.
So doodling may add nothing. It may simply prevent something worse. You are not boosting attention; you are plugging a leak.
That framing also predicts where the effect should collapse. It does.
Where It Doesn't Work
Later research complicates the popular version considerably. Structured doodling during study confers no benefit to free recall, and free-form doodling can impose memory costs.
Consistent with the mechanism. If doodling helps by absorbing spare capacity during an under-demanding task, then during a task that already consumes your full capacity it absorbs nothing spare. It competes.
The rough rule that emerges:
- Boring, low-demand, listening-type task? Doodling plausibly helps.
- Demanding study or visual work? It plausibly hurts, especially when the doodling is free-form and takes real thought.
- A meeting that could have been an email? The exact condition the original study modelled.
So Why Do People Do It?
The research above concerns effects. The question of why people doodle spontaneously has a simpler answer: boredom raises arousal in an unpleasant way, and small repetitive motor activity settles it. Doodling belongs to the same family as tapping a pen, bouncing a knee, or worrying a paperclip, with one distinction. It leaves a record.
Which is probably why it feels unlike other fidgeting. You are left with an artifact of a stretch of time you weren't fully occupied. Most people, revisiting a page of meeting doodles, can gauge roughly how the meeting went.
What This Doesn't Show
Worth stating plainly, since much writing on the subject overreaches.
- It does not show doodling makes you more creative. That is a separate and far weaker literature.
- It does not show your doodles reveal your personality. Inferring character or emotional state from drawing style is a long-discredited practice with poor validity evidence.
- It does not show doodling helps everyone, or helps in class, or should replace note-taking.
What it shows is narrower and still useful: during a boring task you nonetheless need to attend to, occupying your hands may keep your mind from leaving.

- Keep it undemanding. Shading, hatching, repeated shapes. The original study used shading for a reason.
- Deploy it during listening, not during reading or heavy thinking.
- Don't try to make it good. The moment it becomes a drawing you care about, it is a primary task, and the effect is gone.
